Lens Day

Athens, Georgia

When the stress levels climb towards the end of the fall semester, I bring in more than two dozen lenses for the kids to try. Modern, razor sharp optics through classic vintage glass to at least one plastic toy lens – they should learn something, but they laugh an awful low.

Old Friends

Atlanta, Georgia

I grew up in a small Massachusetts town, about 30 miles outside of Boston. Not much happened there. Two elementary schools, one junior-senior high school, just shy of 9,000 people when I graduated. Good schools, most kids made it into colleges if they wanted to.

It also produced a couple of notable journalists, including Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist David Carson. He graduated a year or two behind me and was the opening speaker today at the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar, speaking at length about the impacts of AI on journalism.

The other notable fellow, from about the same time, is Alphonso Marsh who was embedded with a military unit for CNN when they found Saddam Hussein in a spider hole in Iraq. Marsh grew up down the street from me.

Small wonders from a small town.

Seeing, Day One

Atlanta, Georgia

Into Atlanta last night (well, Peachtree Corners, technically) for the Atlanta Photojournalism Seminar. This is probably my 21st one, I don’t think I’ve missed any since relocating here. Great line up, as usual.
