My friend Billy Weeks started a program years ago at the UNiversity of Tennessee – Chattanooga and was able to relaunch it this year. His Photo Night is massive, several hundred people and a ton of energy, so we loaded up a van full of kids and drove them north for an evening of learning, communing and … well, fried chicken.

The contrast of concrete and sky around our building can be elegant and jarring.

The long weekend is over, now the longer week begins … a little flowering amongst the rust.

Day two and the big categories come up in each of the six divisions, leading to a lot of focus on the part of the judges and committee members. Every detail is scrutinized, every moment is studied.

One of the reasons I wanted to bring the Best of Photojournalism competition here was so the students could both witness and interact with the judges. This year, at the end of most categories, the moderators turned to the students and asked if they had questions.
There was so much knowledge being transferred in those moments, makes all the effort worthwhile.

It’s back – it’s judging weekend, in person, for the Best of Photojournalism competition. We kicked off with a series of talks from the judges and committee members, then a welcome dinner (complete with bubble cameras). Tomorrow, the judging commences.

The morning drive in was pretty, too.
