Our first full day here, so why are we here? We brought 17 students to Australia to cover the Women’s World Cup for the Associated Press. In a few days we’ll split into three teams, one headed north to Brisbane, one staying put and mine will head south to Melbourne.
We started the day with a visit from Mark Baker, AP’s photo editor for Australia and New Zealand. What I expected to be a short logistics and welcome visit turned into a three-plus hour long discussion and tutorial with the students – it was fantastic.
We then headed out to explore.

That was a long flight, but it was sunny and cool when we landed. After rounding up the kids and getting everyone’s credentials, the profs went out to dinner.

The challenge with doing a photo-a-day project when you’re on a 14 hour flight that crosses 11 time zones is you never really know what time it is where you are. So … I think I got this right.

And so it begins – 29 days away, off on an adventure down under.

Athens, Georgia
Last night in Athens for … a long time. So, we went to the mid-grade Mexican place. Which is damned good.

I often see car pieces, large and small, scattered around this intersection. Today, I saw where some of them come from.
