The packing and loading went relatively easy. A few errands to return keys and then we pointed the car and trailer south. Around 7 p.m., just north of Harrisonburg, Virginia, on I-81, there was a bang, a shudder and a series of big sways. A glance in the sideview mirror showed chunks of rubber flying and some sparks.

Pulling over, I found the axle had come adrift from the leaf spring, slamming the tire into the fender and shredding it. What had started as an easier morning ended on a flatbed.
